Industry News & Insights:

  1. Frame is spinning off from Nutanix!

Hold my stroopwafel when I join Dizzion-Frame!

I'm thrilled to share that Frame and Dizzion, two leaders in the Desktop as a Service (DaaS) industry, are merging! This significant move forms one of the largest independent DaaS providers, with access to 300 global data centers across major cloud providers and on-premises. Dizzion-Frame together is now offering unmatched choice and flexibility to our customers supporting Azure, AWS, GCP, IBM Cloud, Nutanix AHV, and VMware vSphere. ‘Lights on. Let’s turn and burn.’ A full read on the article I wrote can be found here, including official press release, FAQ, and more - including a great post by Nikola Bozinovic (Founder of Frame): ‘Why is Frame spinning off from Nutanix and joining forces with Dizzion’.

  2. AEC Magazine’s Cloud Workstation Special Report

This very special report covers over 40 pages of content dedicated to the latest workstation technology for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction workflows. If you’ve ever looked at public cloud workstations and been confused, you’re not alone. Between Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure, there are hundreds of different instance types to choose from.

The big question for design, engineering, and architecture firms is how each virtual machine (VM) performs with CAD, Building Information Modelling (BIM), or design visualization software. There is very little information in the public domain, and certainly none that compares performance and price of multiple VMs from multiple providers using real-world applications and datasets, and also captures the end-user experience. We have spent months of work collecting data and recording end-user experience videos with 40+ instances on Azure, AWS, GCP and OVHCloud running 25+ different applications including Autodesk Revit, Inventor, VRED and also Unreal Engine, Enscape, Keyshot, Vray and many more. We used Full HD and 4K resolution in various network scenarios using Frame Remoting Protocol (FRP). All in all a real comprehensive set of data which helps in designing, sizing, and troubleshooting the most advanced Desktop as a Service use cases. This AEC Magazine and Develop3D Cloud Workstation Special Report and the website https://ux.fra.me contains the first set of data with more to come. Meanwhile, if you have questions feel free to contact us.

  3. Gartner Forecasts Worldwide Public Cloud End-User Spending to Reach Nearly $600B in 2023 with Desktop as a Service (DaaS) estimated at $3.5B in 2024.

Cloud computing is fueling digital business transformation through emerging technologies like generative AI. Hyperscale cloud providers are leading the way in driving the cloud agenda as organizations recognize its strategic importance for digital transformation. Generative AI, supported by large language models, requires powerful and scalable computing capabilities that cloud platforms provide. In 2023, all segments of the cloud market are expected to grow, with Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) experiencing the highest spending growth. By 2026, 75% of organizations are projected to adopt a cloud-based digital transformation model.

Cloud infrastructure and platform services are crucial for emerging technologies that enhance customer interactions, such as chatbots and digital twins. While SaaS remains the largest segment of the cloud market, SaaS spending is expected to grow as providers redesign their offerings to incorporate cloud-native capabilities, AI, and composability, driven by business technologists' increasing ownership of budgets. This transformation will drive innovation and replacement in the cloud platform and application markets.

  4. What runs ChatGPT? and a deeper look inside of Microsoft's AI supercomputer.

Presented by Mark Russinovich, Microsoft Azure CTO, this video covers how Microsoft collaborated with NVIDIA to deliver purpose-built AI infrastructure with NVIDIA GPUs. How Project Forge checkpointing works to restore job states if a long training job fails or needs to be migrated. How UK-based company, Wayve, is using Azure's AI supercomputer infrastructure for self-driving cars and how Confidential Computing works with Azure AI to combine datasets without sharing personally identifiable information for secure multiparty collaborations.

  5. How Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) achieved complete digital transformation.

SOM, a leading global architecture firm known for iconic buildings, achieved complete digital transformation by migrating to the cloud. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, SOM aimed to become the first fully cloud-based architecture firm. To achieve this ambitious goal, they migrated their infrastructure to AWS and adopted Frame's Desktop as a Service (DaaS) model.

SOM's digital transformation strategy encompasses three pillars:

    1. SOM Fabric: A global file system that enables efficient access to large file data stores, laying the foundation for seamless cloud migration and collaborative project file sharing.

    2. SOM Stream: Using Frame virtual desktops hosted in AWS, SOM replaced expensive workstations with lightweight Samsung Chromebooks, ensuring operational continuity and cost-effectiveness during the pandemic.

    3. SOM Spin: Integrating Slack with Frame via APIs, SOM enables users to be aware of resource usage and provision of on-demand virtual machines, promoting resource efficiency and flexibility.

  3. Solutions Guide: Integrating Azure Active Directory Conditional Access Rules with Frame

Integrating Azure AD Conditional Access (CA) rules with Frame's virtual machines (VMs) adds an extra layer of security. These rules allow administrators to set conditions for user access to specific applications and resources. By combining consistent IP addresses with Azure AD CA rules, organizations can enhance VM protection and mitigate security risks. This solution guide outlines the step-by-step process of integrating Azure AD Conditional Access Rules with Frame. We will begin by configuring a Frame account to enable access to Office 365 (O365) Cloud Services from Azure-deployed Frame workload VMs. The same logic and configuration can also be applied in other scenarios, such as denying access to other VMs or requiring multi-factor authentication. 4. Apple Vision Pro Impressions!

Marques Brownlee tried Apple's first-ever spatial computing device, a $3500 VR headset and recorded his findings and honest thoughts. Topics covered: Navigation, Computing, Haptics, Battery life, Immersive training and learning, and what does this mean for the future of AI? A great detailed video including some (potential) links to Frame with Desktop as a Service. The full 20 minute video can be found by clicking the link above.

  5. WebGPU (not WebGL) Demo

WebGPU is the working name for a potential web standard and JavaScript API for accelerated graphics and computing, aiming to provide "modern 3D graphics and computation capabilities". It is developed by the W3C GPU for the Web Community Group with engineers from Apple, Mozilla, Microsoft, Google, and others. Unlike WebGL, WebGPU is not a direct port of any existing native API. It is based on APIs provided by Vulkan, Metal, and Direct3D 12 and is intended to provide high performance across mobile and desktop platforms. An awesome webGPU demo can be found by clicking the link above.
